Do the trading strategies on social media actually work?
A screenshot of a great month proves nothing about a strategy. We’ve been testing the viral ones on years of data. Here is the scorecard.
Short answer
Mostly no, at least not as taught. We backtested 8 viral claims on years of Nasdaq futures and index data, after costs. 4 lost money as taught, the “gap always fills” rule barely beat a fake-gap baseline, and the 3 that made money each came with a catch: one year produced most of the profit, or the drawdowns would end most accounts.
The scorecard
| Claim | What we found | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| The gap always fills | 59.5% filled vs 55.2% for a fake gap; gaps over 1% filled ~1 in 4 | Mostly myth |
| Opening range breakout | 6 in 10 first breaks fail; textbook avg loss −$1,335 | Myth as taught |
| The 10AM setup | 475 W / 1,378 L, −$55,180; every year to 2025 red | Myth as taught |
| Buy the dip after 3 red days | $356 vs $38 per contract, but 2022 made most of it | Partly true |
| 5-minute candle + 20 EMA | +$289K, but 3 losing years and −$99K drawdown | Real, but lumpy |
| 8:30–9:30 range model | 34% winners, +0.12R, −58% drawdown at 2% risk | Real, with a catch |
| Sell the wick / wait for the sweep | Both lost on the 5-min chart | Myth |
| Copy Congress’s trades | −1.6% vs S&P 500; 42% beat it | Myth |
Why viral strategies look better than they are
- One good period. The 10AM setup lost money every year from 2017 to 2025, then made about $22k in 2026.
- No costs. Every test above charges commissions and slippage on every trade.
- Win rate without loss size. The “88% win rate” ORB lost money.
- No baseline. Gaps “fill” 59.5% of the time, but a random level the same distance away gets hit 55.2%.
How to check a strategy yourself
- Write the rules down so there’s no judgement left.
- Run every day, not the screenshots.
- Charge costs.
- Compare with a flipped or random version.
- Look at it year by year.

Questions
Are trading strategies on TikTok and Instagram profitable?
Most of the ones we tested were not, as taught. Of 8 viral claims backtested on years of Nasdaq data, 4 lost money and the rest either barely beat a baseline or relied on one big year or very large drawdowns.
How can I tell if a trading strategy is real?
Turn it into fixed rules, test every day in the sample with costs included, compare it with a flipped or random version, and look at results year by year.
