Myth Test #16
Sweep, flip, delta: does the “smart money” setup work? 9 years of NQ
A viral reel calls it the setup smart money uses: price sweeps an old high, closes back under it, structure flips and buying pressure turns to selling. We turned it into fixed rules and ran it on every NQ futures bar since 2017.
Short answer
There’s an edge, but it’s too thin to trust. On the NQ 30-minute chart from April 2017 to September 2026 the setup made +$83K on 503 trades (42.5% winners, profit factor 1.13) with one contract. The same rules lost money on the 1-hour chart, gold was coin-flip territory (profit factor 1.11), only 5 of 10 years made money, and of 380 variations we tried, the best ones on older NQ data lost on newer data.
The rules we tested
- Liquidity: a swing high (3 bars each side) at least 10 bars old that hasn’t been taken out.
- Sweep: a candle trades above it and closes back below it.
- Structure flip: within 10 bars, a close below the last swing low formed before the sweep.
- Delta shift: estimated buying-minus-selling pressure over 3 bars turns negative after being positive, on above-average volume.
- Trade: sell at the flip candle’s close, stop just above the sweep’s high, target 2× the risk, out after 48 bars at most. Mirror everything for longs.
Results on NQ
| Chart | Trades | Winners | Total, 1 NQ contract | Per trade |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15-minute | 956 | 42.9% | +$112K | +$118 |
| 30-minute (as taught) | 503 | 42.5% | +$83K | +$164 |
| 1-hour | 213 | 41.3% | −$6K | −$28 |
Random direction on the same entries, stops and targets averaged about zero (−0.002R a trade over 20 runs), so the 30-minute result is about 1.4 standard deviations above chance: suggestive, not proof.
By year (30-minute chart)
| Year | Total |
|---|---|
| 2017 | +$0.3K |
| 2018 | −$5.1K |
| 2019 | +$11.9K |
| 2020 | −$28.8K |
| 2021 | +$4.4K |
| 2022 | +$70.1K |
| 2023 | −$12.3K |
| 2024 | −$1.8K |
| 2025 | +$46.1K |
| 2026 (to Sep 9) | −$2.2K |
Together, 2022 and 2025 made more than the whole total. The worst drawdown was about −$41K.
Can it be made better?
We tried 380 variations: prior-day highs and lows instead of swing points, main session only, with or against the trend, delta filter on or off, and four exits, on the 15- and 30-minute charts and on gold. We picked the best versions using data before 2023 and checked them on 2023–2026. On NQ the 8 best versions lost on the newer data (−0.02R a trade, worse than the average variation). On gold the best versions held up a little (+0.09R), but they mixed “with the trend” and “against the trend”, so no clear rule sits behind them.
Verdict: not proven. The setup isn’t a scam, but its edge is small, it depends on the timeframe and a couple of big years, and tuning it mostly fits the past.
Method and data
- NQ futures 1-minute data resampled to 15-, 30- and 60-minute bars, April 2017 to September 9, 2026; gold (Oanda XAU/USD) 2006–2020.
- Delta is estimated from each bar’s close position and volume, since tick-level order flow isn’t in the data.
- One contract ($20 per point), $15 per trade for costs; stop checked before target when both fall in one bar.
- Our fixed-rule version of a setup shared publicly; the creator’s own entries may differ. Hypothetical results.
Questions
Does the liquidity sweep setup work on NQ?
Slightly, on one timeframe. On the 30-minute NQ chart from 2017 to 2026 it made +$83K on 503 trades with one contract (profit factor 1.13), but it lost on the 1-hour chart and only 5 of 10 years were profitable.
Is a sweep plus structure flip better than random?
A little. Random direction on the same entries averaged about zero, and the setup averaged +0.06R a trade, about 1.4 standard deviations above chance. That’s suggestive, not proof.
Can you optimize the sweep setup?
We tried 380 variations. On NQ the best versions on 2017–2022 data lost money on 2023–2026 data, which means the tuning mostly fit the past.
