Myth Test #9

The viral AI “trained on 12 billion candles”, tested on NQ

Viral posts are selling new traders an “AI shortcut”: a free model trained on 12 billion candles that “made thousands”. We ran it walk-forward on Nasdaq futures, with no peeking.

Trading Decisions Lab · Updated

Short answer

No edge. Over 9,522 hours of NQ futures (January 2025 to September 2026), the model called the next move’s direction right 49.4% of the time, a coin flip. Simply guessing “price won’t move” was more accurate than its forecasts, and trading every forecast lost −$308K on one contract. Its most confident calls did even worse.

What it means

A big training set doesn’t make a forecast tradable. Test any model, AI or not, on data it has never seen, after costs, before you trust it.

Method and data

Kronos-small, an open-source research model, run walk-forward on NQ futures hourly bars, January 2025 to September 2026: each forecast used only data before that hour. One contract, $20 cost per trade. The original post was shown blurred for commentary; its profit claim was not verified. Hypothetical results.

Questions

Can an AI model trained on billions of candles predict NQ futures?

Not the one we tested. Run walk-forward on 9,522 hours of NQ futures, it called direction right 49.4% of the time and lost −$308K on one contract trading every forecast.
