How many MNQ contracts should you trade? Position size calculator

Pick the dollar risk first, then let the stop decide the size. Here is the formula, a calculator, and a table for common stops.

Trading Decisions Lab · Updated

Short answer

Divide the dollars you’re willing to lose by the stop’s cost per contract. MNQ moves $2 per point and NQ $20, so contracts = risk ÷ (stop in points × $2) for MNQ. Risking $300 with a 30-point stop is $300 ÷ $60 = 5 MNQ. Round down, and check that your worst likely losing streak still fits inside your drawdown limit.

Rounded down. Ten MNQ equal one NQ, so 10 MNQ or more can be traded as NQ to save on commissions, if your account allows it.

Check it against your prop firm limit

  1. Find your strategy’s win rate and the matching worst-case losing streak in our losing streaks table.
  2. Multiply that streak by your risk per trade.
  3. The result must stay below your trailing drawdown (often $2,000 on a 50K account) with room to spare.

Example: 40% win rate, 13-loss worst case, $300 risk = $3,900, which would end a 50K evaluation. At $150 it’s $1,950, just inside, and 2 MNQ with a 30-point stop fits that risk.

Choose the stop first

Set the stop where the trade is wrong and outside normal noise (see where to put your stop), then size to it. Never shrink a stop to fit more contracts.

Questions

How do I calculate position size for MNQ?

Contracts = dollar risk ÷ (stop distance in points × $2). For example, $300 risk with a 30-point stop is 5 MNQ contracts.

How much is one point on MNQ and NQ?

One point is $2 on MNQ (Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100) and $20 on NQ (E-mini Nasdaq-100). Ten MNQ contracts equal one NQ.

How many MNQ contracts can I trade on a 50K prop account?

Size so that your worst likely losing streak stays inside the trailing drawdown. With a $2,000 drawdown and a 40% win rate, about $150 risk a trade fits, which is 2 MNQ with a 30-point stop. Your firm’s contract limit also applies.
