What’s the best TradingView indicator for beginners?

New traders stack RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands and moving averages until the chart says nothing. Here is a simpler test.

Trading Decisions Lab · Updated

Short answer

The one that tells you where to get out. RSI, MACD and moving averages describe price but don’t give a stop or a target, so they leave the hardest decisions to you. ATR is more useful because it sizes the stop. Best of all is a plan on the chart: entry, stop and target decided before you click, from rules that were tested after costs with every losing trade counted.

A tierATR, because it sizes your stop
D tierRSI and MACD on their own

Five checks before you trust any indicator

  1. Non-repainting. Signals must not change after the bar closes.
  2. It defines the exit. A stop and a target, not just an arrow.
  3. Tested after costs, with losing trades included.
  4. Tested on data it wasn’t built on, and against a shuffled or random version.
  5. Shows the bad periods, not only the best month.

Where Compass fits (our product)

Compass by Trading Decisions Lab is our non-repainting TradingView indicator for new traders. Every signal draws the entry, stop and target. In a simulated backtest of 862 day trades on Nasdaq-100 futures plus swing calls (Oct 2021 – Sep 2026, after costs), $10,000 grew to $79,133 with a worst drop of −9.2%. Every signal was run through five robustness tests, and every live signal passed at least four. These are hypothetical results; live results will differ.

Questions

What is the best TradingView indicator for a beginner?

One that defines where to get out. Indicators like RSI and MACD don’t give a stop or target. ATR helps size a stop, and an indicator that draws a tested entry, stop and target removes the guesswork.

Should beginners use RSI and MACD?

They can add context, but on their own they often conflict and give no exit. A plan with a defined stop and size matters more than which oscillator you use.

What does non-repainting mean?

A non-repainting indicator does not change a signal after the bar has closed. Repainting indicators can look perfect in hindsight because past signals are redrawn.
