Institutional Edge Algo v8.5 — Full Guide
Edge Score, order blocks, BOS/CHoCH, FVG zones, and signal types explained.
Overview
Institutional Edge Algo v8.5 is a comprehensive market structure tool that automates order block detection, Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH) identification, Fair Value Gap (FVG) mapping, and signal generation — all quantified into a 0–100 Edge Score that represents the confluence quality of each signal.
Settings Reference
| Setting | What It Controls | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Min Edge Score | Minimum score for a signal to display | 60 | Raise to 75+ for higher-quality signals only. Lower = more signals, lower average quality. |
| Entry Mode | Breakout vs. Retest signal logic | Breakout | Retest mode waits for price to return to order block after initial break — better R:R but fewer signals |
| Cooldown Period | Bars to wait before allowing a new signal at the same level | 5 | Prevents signal spam at the same price zone |
| Volatility Spacing Sensitivity | How far apart levels must be to be considered distinct | Medium | Higher = fewer, more spaced levels |
| VWAP Context Toggle | Whether to include VWAP position in Edge Score | On | Strongly recommended to keep on — VWAP context is a meaningful confluence factor |
Edge Score Explained
The Edge Score (0–100) is a composite metric that combines:
- Candle quality: How impulsive and decisive was the candle that created the order block?
- Volume analysis: Was there above-average volume supporting the move?
- Trend strength: Does the signal align with the dominant structural trend?
- Price extension: How far has price moved from the order block? (Extreme extension reduces score)
The Edge Score is a confluence metric, NOT a win rate. A score of 80 does not mean 80% of these signals win. It means 4 out of 4 confluence factors are strongly aligned — which historically improves the probability, not guarantees it.
Visual Elements
- Order Block Zones: Shaded areas representing institutional supply/demand zones. Fresh zones (never retested) are displayed at full opacity. Weakened zones (already tested but holding) are shown at reduced opacity.
- BOS Labels: "BOS" appears when price breaks the most recent swing high (bullish BOS) or low (bearish BOS), confirming trend continuation.
- CHoCH Labels: "CHoCH" appears when the sequence of higher highs/lows (or lower highs/lows) breaks, signaling a potential trend reversal.
- FVG Shading: Fair Value Gaps are shaded areas where price moved too fast, leaving an imbalance. Price often returns to fill these zones.
- Signal Labels: Each signal shows the direction, Edge Score, and type. The ⚡ symbol indicates VWAP confirmation is present.
- Grey/Blocked Labels: Grey labels indicate a signal that was suppressed by the cooldown period — the system is protecting against overtrading the same level.
Signal Types
| Signal | Description | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Breakout Long | Bullish break above order block with Edge Score ≥ Min | Trend continuation with momentum |
| Breakout Short | Bearish break below order block with Edge Score ≥ Min | Trend continuation with momentum |
| Retest Long | Bullish return to fresh order block after initial break | Better R:R, more precise entry |
| Retest Short | Bearish return to supply zone after initial break | Better R:R, more precise entry |
| Blocked (Grey) | Signal suppressed by cooldown — same level traded recently | System protection against overtrading |
Recommended Timeframes
- Primary signal chart: 5-min for NQ/ES futures. 15-min for equity swing entries.
- Context chart: 15–30 min to establish the dominant BOS direction.
Tips & Best Practices
- ES 60+ is the minimum — ES 75+ with ⚡ VWAP confirmation is the sweet spot. These higher-score signals represent the most complete confluence alignment.
- Use Retest mode for better risk management on volatile instruments like NQ. Waiting for the retest of an order block gives you a tighter, more defined stop loss placement.
- Grey labels mean the system is protecting you from overtrading the same level. Don't try to override the cooldown — if you feel compelled to trade a suppressed signal, that is a bias check moment.
Common Mistakes
- Taking every signal regardless of Edge Score. The point of the Edge Score is to filter out marginal setups. A score of 45 means the confluence case is weak — these signals have a lower expected value.
- Ignoring VWAP context (⚡). VWAP is the single most important intraday reference level for institutional order flow. A signal with ⚡ means price is at a structural level AND VWAP is confirming the direction — a meaningful double confirmation.
- Trading against the dominant BOS direction. If the structural trend (as shown by BOS labels) is bearish, taking long signals requires higher conviction and should be sized smaller. Trade with structure, not against it.
